Lochner vs. New York definitions

Britannica Concise

U.S. Supreme Court decision (1905) that struck down a New York law setting 10 hours of labor a day as the legal maximum in the baking trade. Justice Rufus W. Peckham, writing for the Court, declared that the 14th Amendment prohibited states from curtailing employers' freedom to make their own economic arrangements with employees. The opinion drew a stinging rebuke from O. W. Holmes, Jr., whose dissent became the prevailing interpretation of the 14th Amendment by the 1930s, when maximum-hours laws were held constitutional.
