City (pop., 1996 est.: 150,000), SW Massachusetts, on the Connecticut River. Settled in 1636, it was incorporated in 1641. It was burned during King Philip's War (1675). It was the site of an arsenal during the Amer. Revolution, which was a target of Shays' Rebellion in 1786. During the Amer. Civil War the U.S. Armory (see Springfield Armory) first produced the Springfield muskets. It is home to several colleges and the Basketball Hall of Fame. It was the birthplace of T. Geisel (Dr. Seuss)..City (pop., 1996 est.: 113,000), capital of Illinois. It lies along the Sangamon River in the central part of the state. The first settler built a cabin in 1818; in 1837, largely through the efforts of A. Lincoln and other members of the Illinois legislature, the state capital was transferred there. Lincoln lived there until he became president in 1861; he is buried there. An educational and government services center, it also is a market center for a rich farming area. City (pop., 1996 est.: 143,500), SW Missouri. Settled in 1829, it grew slowly until the U.S. period of heavy westward migration. Confederate forces held it briefly during the Amer. Civil War, and Wild Bill Hickok lived there in the 1860s. Its agricultural-based economy is augmented by its educational institutions. The international headquarters of the Assemblies of God Church is in the city.
