Britannica Concise

Ancient seaport, Cilicia, Asia Minor. It was located west of modern Mersin, S central Turkey. Founded by Greek colonists from Rhodes, it was conquered by Alexander the Great in 333 BC. Destroyed in the 1st cent. BC by Tigranes II of Armenia, it was rebuilt by the Roman general Pompey. Traces of the port's artificial harbor and a portion of a long colonnade remain.
