n
1: wood that is easy to saw (from conifers such as pine or fir) [syn: softwood, deal]

Merriam Webster's

I. noun Date: 1809 1. the wood of a coniferous tree (as a fir or pine) whether hard or soft as distinguished from that of an angiospermous tree 2. a tree that yields softwood II. adjective Date: 1855 having or made of softwood

Britannica Concise

Timber obtained from coniferous trees (mainly of the pine and fir families). With the exception of bald cypress, tamarack, and larch, softwood trees are evergreens. Softwood is mostly obtained from the Baltic, Scandinavia, and N. America and is the source of about 80% of the world's production of timber. The term sometimes imprecisely means all soft and hard woods used as construction wood in temperate regions. Softwoods of longleaf pine, Douglas fir, and yew are much harder in the mechanical sense than several hardwoods.

Oxford Reference Dictionary

n. the wood of pine, spruce, or other conifers, easily sawn.

Collin's Cobuild Dictionary

(softwoods) Softwood is the wood from trees such as pines, that grow quickly and can be cut easily. N-MASS
