Webster's 1913 DictionarySaber Sa"ber, Sabre Sa"bre, n. [F. sabre, G. s["a]bel; of uncertain origin; cf. Hung. sz['a]blya, Pol. szabla, Russ. sabla, and L. Gr. zabo`s crooked, curved.] A sword with a broad and heavy blade, thick at the back, and usually more or less curved like a scimiter; a cavalry sword. Saber fish, or Sabre fish (Zo["o]l.), the cutlass fish. Webster's 1913 DictionaryCutlass Cut"lass (k[u^]t"las), n.; pl. Cutlasses (-[e^]z). [F. coutelas (cf. It. coltellaccio), augm. fr. L. cultellus a small knife, dim. of culter knife. See Colter, and cf. Curtal ax.] A short, heavy, curving sword, used in the navy. See Curtal ax. Cutlass fish, (Zo["o]l.), a peculiar, long, thin, marine fish (Trichiurus lepturus) of the southern United States and West Indies; -- called also saber fish, silver eel, and, improperly, swordfish. |
