n
1: an acute infectious viral disease of cattle (usually fatal); characterized by fever and diarrhea and inflammation of mucous membranes [syn: rinderpest, cattle plague]

Merriam Webster's

noun Etymology: German, from Rinder, plural, cattle + Pest pestilence Date: 1865 an acute infectious usually fatal disease of ruminant mammals (as cattle) that is caused by a morbillivirus (species Rinderpest virus) and that is marked by fever, diarrhea, and inflammation of mucous membranes

Britannica Concise

Acute, highly contagious viral disease of ruminants (incl. wild cloven-hoofed ones), common in Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and the Middle East. The virus spreads by close direct or indirect contact. It is the most severe infectious disease of cattle, with sudden onset and high mortality; fever and appetite loss are followed by symptoms incl. eye and nasal discharge, labored breathing, and diarrhea; prostration, coma, and death follow within 6-12 days. Local eradication depends on controlling it in wild animals and eliminating infected domestic animals; vaccination combined with quarantine is effective.
