Study of the mental processes involved in the perception, production, and acquisition of language. Much psycholinguistic work has been devoted to the learning of language by children and on speech processing and comprehension by both children and adults. In the 1960s and '70s, the theories of N. Chomsky stimulated much research; in recent years psycholinguists have employed other models as well. See also linguistics.
