It is long and narrow and extends northeast-southwest between the S. China and Sulu seas. It has a mountainous backbone that runs its entire length, with the highest peak at Mt. Mantalingajan (6,839 ft, or 2,085 m). The capital is Puerto Princesa. Remnants of a Pleistocene epoch land bridge that connected it to Borneo explain the similarity of the two islands' vegetation. A coastal plain supports most of Palawan's population and is the main agricultural area. Scattered settlement and shifting agriculture predominate, with rice as the main food crop.
