Morisot definitions
Merriam Webster'sbiographical name Berthe 1841-1895 French painter Britannica ConciseFrench painter and printmaker. Granddaughter of J.-H. Fragonard, she studied with C. Corot, but the major influence over her work was E. Manet, whose brother she later married. She exhibited regularly with the Impressionists. None of her exhibits proved commercially successful, but she outsold C. Monet, A. Renoir, and A. Sisley. Her coloring was delicate and subtle, often with a subdued emerald glow, and her subjects were often members of her family (e.g., The Artist's Sister Edma and Their Mother, 1870). She is best known for her extremely loose brushwork, and for the sensitivity she brought to her female subjects. |
