U.S. public official. Born in New York City, he became the editor of American Agriculturist (1922-33) and a close friend of F. Roosevelt. He served as secretary of the treasury in Roosevelt's cabinet (1934-45) and was responsible for financing the New Deal programs and the enormous expenditures of World War II.
