mitral insufficiency definitions

Britannica Concise

Inadequate closure of the heart's mitral valve, allowing backflow of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium. The most common cause is scarring from rheumatic heart disease (see rheumatic fever); others are congenital defects in the valve or the muscles that close it, and, less often, endocarditis and cardiac tumor. Diagnosis is based on a heart murmur and patterns on echocardiography or electrocardiography. Mitral insufficiency may have no symptoms or may cause easy tiring and difficulty in breathing. The atrium may enlarge, after which left ventricular failure (see heart failure) eventually develops. It is treated by restricting vigorous exercise, reducing sodium intake and increasing its excretion, and administering anticlotting drugs. Valves with severe defects are surgically replaced.
