Russian space station consisting of a core module launched in 1986 and additional modules launched separately later and attached to assemble a large, flexible laboratory in space. The third generation of Russian space stations (see Salyut), Mir featured six docking ports for modules or other spacecraft, expanded living quarters, more power, and modernized research equipment. Two cosmonauts were its first occupants, spending 53 days adjusting equipment and bringing the complex into working order. Late in 1987, Yury Romanenko (b.1944) set a new endurance record of 326 days in space aboard Mir. In the 1990s several U.S. space shuttles docked with Mir and Russian-U.S. collaborative studies were undertaken.
