Protocol for connections between musical digital synthesizers and a computer's sound card. The MIDI protocol uses 8-bit asynchronous serial transmission with a data rate of 31.25 kilobytes per second. The transmitted data do not represent music directly, but rather describes aspects of the sound (such as pitch and sound volume). The resulting musical sound waves are actually stored in wavetables on the computer or musical instrument.
