Britannica Concise

U.S. sprinter. Born in Atlanta, he grew up in Chicago and became an outstanding sprinter at Marquette Univ. In 1932 and 1936 he won Olympic silver medals in the 100-m dash, losing close races to his great rivals Eddie Tolan and J. Owens, and won a gold medal in the 1936 games with the 4 100-m relay team. He later became a U.S. Congressman (1971-79).
