Britannica Concise

U.S. dramatist. Born in St. Petersburg, Fla., he worked as a newspaper reporter, as tutor for the children of J. Steinbeck, and as stage manager at the Actors Studio. Starting in 1964 his plays were produced in regional, off-Broadway, and Broadway theaters. They include Bad Habits (1971), The Tubs (1974), Master Class (1995), Love! Valor! Compassion! (1995; film, 1997), and the controversial Corpus Christi (1998). He wrote the book for the musical Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993).
