U.S. public official. Born near Marietta, Ga., he moved to New York in 1892, where he organized the Hudson and Manhattan Railway companies (later consolidated), which built tunnels under the Hudson River. He supported W. Wilson in the 1912 presidential campaign and was appointed secretary of the treasury (1913-18); he married Wilson's daughter in 1914. In World War I he directed drives that raised $18 billion to finance the war effort. He was director general of U.S. railroads 1917-19, and later U.S. senator from California (1933-38).
