Macquarie definitions

Merriam Webster's

geographical name river 590 miles (949 kilometers) SE Australia in E central New South Wales flowing NNW to Darling River

Britannica Concise

British soldier and colonial governor. He served with the British army in N. America, Europe, the W. Indies, and India before being appointed governor of New S. Wales, Australia, in 1809. There he replaced the corrupt military corps that had overthrown the previous governor, W. Bligh. He began a program of public-works construction and town planning that gave opportunities to Emancipists (freed convicts), established the colony's currency, and encouraged exploration and settlement. His policy favoring Emancipist agriculture angered the large landowners and sheep farmers (Exclusionists), and he was recalled in 1821.
