ID'OCRASE, n. [Gr. form, and mixture; a mixed figure.]
A mineral, the vesuvian of Werner, sometimes massive,and very often in shining prismatic crystals. Its primitive form is a four-sided prism with square bases. It is found near Vesuvius, in unaltered rocks ejected by the volcano; also in primitive rocks, in various other localities.

Vesuvianite Ve*su"vi*an*ite, n. (Min.) A mineral occurring in tetragonal crystals, and also massive, of a brown to green color, rarely sulphur yellow and blue. It is a silicate of alumina and lime with some iron magnesia, and is common at Vesuvius. Also called idocrase.
