Griqualand West definitions

Merriam Webster's

geographical name district NW Republic of South Africa in NE Northern Cape N of Orange River; chief town Kimberley

Britannica Concise

Historical region, S. Africa. Now in Northern Cape province, the region lies northwest of the juncture of the Vaal and Orange rivers. It covered an area of 15,444 sq mi (40,000 sq km). It was settled in the late 18th cent. by the Griquas fleeing discrimination around Cape Town. The discovery of diamonds in 1867 led to disputed claims; in 1871 the British annexed Griqualand West, incorporating it into the Cape Colony in 1880. Most Griquas were forced to sell their farms to whites. Diamonds continue to be mined in the area. The main town is Kimberly.
