Founded in 1522, it has played a minor role in Mexican history because of its inaccessibility. Its industries center on processing local agricultural products. It is the site of the Univ. of Colima (founded 1867)..State (pop., 1995 est.: 488,000), W Mexico. Lying on the Pacific coast, most of the small state lies in the narrow coastal plain, beyond which it rises into the Sierra Madre foothills. Its area of 2,106 sq mi (5,454 sq km) includes the Revillagigedo Islands. The soil is generally fertile and productive, but lack of transportation has impeded development. Agriculture is the principal occupation; livestock-raising is important in the higher regions. Its capital is Colima city.
