Coastal city (pop., 1994 est.: 48,000), SE Mississippi. Located east of Gulfport, it grew out of Ft. Louis (established 1719); a nearby earlier fort, Ft. Maurepashad, was the Mississippi valley's first permanent white settlement (1699). It has been under the flags of France, Spain, Britain, the W. Florida Republic, and the Confederacy. By the late 20th cent., casino gambling had become its chief industry, augmented by fishing and seafood processing. Beauvoir, J. Davis's last home, is nearby.
