Lake, S Siberia, Russia in Asia. At 395 mi (636 km) long, with an area of 11,780 sq mi (30,510 sq km), it is the largest freshwater basin in Eurasia. The deepest continental body of water on earth (5,715 ft, or 1,742 m), it contains one-fifth of the fresh water on the earth's surface. Over 300 rivers flow into it; on its east it receives the Barguzin and Selenga rivers, and most of its outflow is through the Angara at the N end. The island of Olkhon is in its center. Plant and animal life are rich and various; more than 1,200 species are unique to the lake. Growing industrialization along its shores has produced threatening pollution.
