AP'ODE, n. [Gr. foot.]
An animal that has no feet, applied to certain fabulous fowls, which are said to have no legs, and also to some birds that have very short legs.
In zoology, the apodes are an order of fishes which have no ventral fins; the first order in Linne's system.

Apod Ap"od, Apode Ap"ode, n.; pl. Apodsor Apodes. [Gr. ?, ?, footless; 'a priv. + ?, ?, foot.] (Zo["o]l.) One of certain animals that have no feet or footlike organs; esp. one of certain fabulous birds which were said to have no feet. Note: The bird of paradise formerly had the name Paradisea apoda, being supposed to have no feet, as these were wanting in the specimens first obtained from the East Indies.
