Almoravid dynasty definitions

Britannica Concise

Berber dynasty that succeeded the Fatimid dynasty in the Maghrib. It flourished in the 11th and early 12th cent. Its founder, Abdallah ibn Yasin, was a religious scholar who used religious reform as his means to gain followers in the mid-11th cent. As the Fatimids lost political control in the aftermath of the Arab invasion, the Almoravids took over Morocco, the rest of the Maghrib, and eventually Muslim Spain. By 1082 their rule reached Algiers. By 1110 they also controlled Muslim Spain, but the Christians began to win back territory in 1118. In the 1120s the Almohads began their rebellion, eventually displacing the Almoravids.
