Allen, Fred definitions

Britannica Concise

U.S. comedian. Born in Cambridge, Mass., he began his career in vaudeville as a juggler and ventriloquist, then turned to comedy and appeared in revues in the 1920s. He entered radio in 1932 and was featured on Town Hall Tonight (1934-39), which became the popular Fred Allen Show (1939-49). He and his wife, Portland Hoffa (1906-1990), played the principal roles along with other characters of "Allen's Alley." He wrote nearly all the 273 episodes, which displayed his laconic style, dry wit, and flawless timing.
